Foxout! is the new collaborative electro-acoustic folk project of Jeremy Young (szilárd) and Daniel Merrill (of Dead Rat Orchestra). Melodic structures and repeated rhythmic cycles borrowing largely from a Celtic tradition are infused with free improvisation both instrumentally and via analog sound manipulations. Guitar, violin, reel-to-reel tape loops, objects and harmonium tubes (which have been ripped out of the body of a harmonium organ).

Thanks to Sound Fjord Gallery for having me as Artist-in-Residence this month, it's been an inspiring experience. Above is a shot of Daniel Merrill (left), me (center) and Austin Milne (right) performing our collaborative sound-poetry work Able & Chronicled Sportsman (Poem in 4 Vocal Iterations) on Sunday, 27 January. We had a blast! Here are a couple excerpts from the full piece, stay tuned for some more project updates!

S U B J E C T  Magazine  just published a feature on Palaver Music, and had founders Jeremy and Catherine interview each other on their projects and areas of interest. We're super excited about this beautiful piece, complete with gorgeous photos by Annalaura Masciavé. Check it out!

Happy New Year from Palaver!  A couple pieces of news from the HQ:

Jeremy Young (szilárd) has been awarded a week-long Residency at Sound Fjord Gallery in London between 21 - 27 January for their 2012/2013 Sequence Series! During this time he will be composing and workshopping an original sound-poetry piece for performance and publication, alongside collaborators
Daniel Merrill (of Dead Rat Orchestra, Sons of Joy) and Austin Milne (of Pop Winds, Black Feelings). They will be hosting an open-exhibition day at Sound Fjord on 27 January from 3-6pm, which includes the debut performance and a Q&A discussion. RSVPs can be made by email. Some info:

The piece is entitled: Able & Chronicled Sportsman (Poem in 4 Vocal Iterations)
A sound-poetry opus for tape-manipulated voice, group humming, treated violin, oscillators, sand, slate, boiling water, brick and amplified found earth. This text, a new piece inspired by the sport of jousting, will be read in four different interpretations incorporating performative direction, improvisation, repetition and reversals. The full piece is the piece performed four times, which serves to divert meaning away from the linguistic values of the words themselves in favour of the performative aspect of language in its embodied holistic form, as all works of sound-poetry attempt to do. This residency is a starting point, a chance for Jeremy to workshop the piece as a performance, and to gather research, content, feedback and formulae for an eventual published edition.

Jeremy's progress during his residency will be updated via the A and C Sportsman blog.

szilárd has a few solo shows coming up for those of you in the UK, check the Upcoming Events page for more info. Also, Jeremy and Daniel have a new duo project in the works (tentatively called Foxout!) which will incorporate live animation by Stefano Marrone as well as extended compositions for guitar, violin and tapes. They will be embarking on a handful of UK and European tour dates in April 2013. Please stay tuned for more info as it comes!

OCTOBER 2012

Sontag Shogun has shared a meandering, pulsating new track called "Woods", recorded as an improvisation in the early Winter of 2012.  It can be officially stated that the trio has begun recording a proper full-length LP to follow-up this year's Absent Warrior, Abandoned Battlefield EP, exciting news!

"Woods" is a sprawling voyage from Emeralds-like synthy layers to an enveloping train sample that gobbles up a concluding piano+voice statement. While this track clearly defines Sontag's early electronic sound, the trio's newer material is weighing heavy on the acoustics of a grand piano as the central focal point.

Listen to "Woods" HERE.

SEPTEMBER 2012

Update: Slow Flow Records in Hokkaido, Japan is now distributing all current Palaver titles, both locally and internationally! Check out his amazing store!

Catherine and I and the good ship Palaver have temporarily relocated across the pond to London! Stay tuned for some interesting projects coming in 2012/13!

First up:
Palaver Press will soon launch its first print publication, TRIGGERED SOUND, a photography art book & essay featuring pieces by Taylor Deupree, Yan Jun, Nicola Ratti, Marla Hlady, Nicolas Szczepanik, sawako and many more! AUGUST 2012

Earlier this week, szilárd premiered his new tape piece, [Unlocks] Six Silver Blankets at Sound-Off, presented by ((audience)).
Download the full recording here!

Frans de Waard with all his linguistic flare and bubbles, wrote a wonderful and concise review of Sontag Shogun's new EP and szilárd's Rust Parhelion cassette in Vital Weekly!

Said of Sontag Shogun's EP, "This is quite good actually. The warmth of piano set against the colder climate of electronics and a bit of field recordings here and there, the rumble of contact microphones and such like make up five great pieces of music that flow right into each other. Too loud to be microsound, but also too soft to be noise - the thought of that! I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there is no piano involved and that all of this comes through us by laptop means, but I hardly couldn't care less. These twenty-six minutes of atmospheric music with a fine experimental twist is really good. One wished for some more of this, but alas none is given yet. I'd be curious to hear more of their work, as this brief introduction tastes like more."

Busy month for us here at Palaver Music,

The Village Voice is running an interview with Sontag Shogun on their Sounds of the City Blog today! Read the full interview below:

Richard Allen from A Closer Listen just posted a BAD ASS review of Spokes, boy oh boy! Plus he promises (!) to review the forthcoming Sontag Shogun EP which comes out Wednesday JULY 18th!
http://acloserlisten.com/2012/07/12/szilard-spokes/

On July 31, szilárd will be opening for Todd Reynolds & R. Luke DuBois at Sound-Off, a sound-art performance salon organized by ((audience)). He will be performing a new, site-specific piece entitled, "[Unlocks] (6 Silver Blankets)". Here's a ridiculous attempt to write an artist's statement:
This is going to be the most minimal piece I've ever performed. This will result in something like piano vert in that I'm limiting myself quite intrusively, to one certain sound and one process of reel-to-reel tape manipulation. Tapes of feedback and square-wave oscillations in shifting tonal patterns, squeeky tricks and hopefully some dusty-floored distortion to ensue.

And MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR NYC BOOTIES TO ZEBULON FOR SONTAG SHOGUN's CD Release Party on JULY 18 !
